Charles Schwab Challenge Round 1

American Davis Thompson put on a brilliant display of accurate ball-striking and clinical putting during the opening round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club, navigating the demanding Fort Worth layout to sign for an exceptional under-par score to stake his claim at the top of the standings. Thompson combined exquisite iron play with great speed on the greens to set a stellar early pace for the rest of the field to chase. Thompson's efficient execution kept him just a step ahead of a highly competitive leaderboard, where major champion Keegan Bradley and a surging Austin Eckroat put together beautiful opening rounds to position themselves directly in the front-running mix. Right on their heels, a dense chasing pack solidified on the leaderboard, highlighted by the steady veteran play of Matt Kuchar and England's Justin Rose, who both managed their way around Hogan's Alley with marvelous tactical discipline. Meanwhile, young ball-strikers Ben Griffin and Maverick McNealy kept themselves firmly embedded in the early conversation, converting crucial par saves down the stretch to ensure they remain well within striking distance heading into the second loop.
