Final results
The opening round of the South African Open concluded with a crowded leaderboard as four players fired matching rounds of 5-under-par 65. Spain’s Alejandro Del Rey set the early clubhouse target, overcoming a shaky start with a run of four consecutive birdies to turn his round around. He was eventually joined at the summit by Finland’s Oliver Lindell, who carded a flawless bogey-free round, as well as Englishman Joe Dean and home favorite Dean Burmester. Burmester, the 2023 champion, delighted the local galleries with an aggressive display that included seven birdies, briefly holding the outright lead before a late stumble. While the leaders found their rhythm, some of the tournament’s biggest names had more measured starts. Five-time champion Ernie Els thrilled fans with a vintage eagle at the par-5 5th but finished with an opening 71. Tournament favorite Patrick Reed also sits at 1-over par after a challenging day on the greens, leaving him six shots adrift. Meanwhile, Japan's Rikuya Hoshino provided one of the day's highlights with a spectacular hole-out for birdie at the 4th, joining a large group tied for 19th at 3-under par. With conditions expected to remain firm and fast, the stage is set for a high-scoring second round as the field battles to make the 36-hole cut.
