Houghton GC · Johannesburg · South Africa
Final results
Brandon Robinson Thompson delivered a masterclass in aggressive parkland golf to seize the lead after the opening round of the 2026 Joburg Open. The Englishman carded a remarkable 4-under-par 66 (on a par-70 layout), navigating the tight Houghton fairways with surgical precision. He currently holds a three-shot cushion over his nearest competitor, Sean Crocker, who posted a solid 1-under 69 to sit in solo second. The chasing pack is tightly bunched, with Sweden's Hugo Townsend and England's Nathan Kimsey leading the group at even-par. South African hopes were bolstered by Luke Brown and Louis Albertse, who both managed to stay within striking distance on a day where the firm greens made scoring difficult. One of the stories of the morning was Maximilian Steinlechner, who despite a roller-coaster back nine, remains in the hunt alongside the highly touted Angel Ayora. As the afternoon wind picked up, many of the late starters struggled to match the early pace, setting the stage for a dramatic second-round cut battle.
